Project Overview
This industrialised system of building was the result of an intensive 13 week research, design development, prototype and documentation programme. The schedule was agreed to because it was necessary to have school children using all of the buildings within 12 months of the commencement of the construction contract. In total buildings or complete schools were constructed on 58 sites.
The client provided accommodation guidelines and the technical brief was the designer’s responsibility. Site planning and the design of ancillary buildings, such as toilet blocks and covered ways, was carried out by the Department of Works.
Critical Design Parameters
Planning solutions called for buildings with a span of 10,800 mm. The system had to lack complexity and sophistication of detail and be constructed from readily available components. The solution was not to be dependent on any one manufacturer or set of patents. Buildings had to be assembled quickly with simple fixings. Assembly and erection had to be possible in remote areas.
