Cleveland Youth Detention Centre

Project Overview
This project is a Codd Stenders Guymer Bailey Joint Venture.

The expanded Cleveland youth detention centre takes the facility from an existing 48 beds to 104 beds. There are all new services and infrastructure including new Education, Administration, Utilities, Operations, Training, Kitchen, Laundry and Stores facilities.

This Centre is designed to meet a new operational philosophy and the latest rehabilitation techniques utilised by the Department of Communities. The youth detention centre is designed to aid the government’s aim to break the cycle of repeat offending through integration of community participation in the rehabilitation process.

Significant Problems Overcome and Value Added
Development of the client brief to provide a revolutionary design that is unlike any other Queensland facility. 20% minimum reduction in energy and water usage and reduced waste creation across the site. Residential look and feel of the new centre while still maintaining the security and robustness expected of a youth detention centre. Low lying areas of site had flooding issues and retention basin issues. Impact of tidal creeks on property boundary.
